One week in

So I’ve been in Ghana for a week now and having a great time! However, if I’m totally honest I’m really missing the group of volunteers I went with in 2010. It’s definitely not the same without them. Despite that though, I am so glad I came and it’s been lovely seeing the kids again and catching up with the family! A lot has changed though, the school looks different and the kids are getting bigger and more mature! My favourite class were the eldest in the school and they left last year :( but tomorrow I’m going to hang out with them because they have a couple of days off from their new senior high schools. They boys are now men and the girls are now women, very scary indeed! Also, there have been many new additions to the family so it’s hard to keep up with everyone. When I was there in 2010 Mama Hana (a teacher at the school and also one of the daughters of Mr and Mrs Dadzie the school’s proprietors) had a baby and now that baby is 3 years old! Her name is Whitney after one of the volunteers who came back to visit when I was volunteering so I know her well. Also, one of Mr and Mrs Dadzie’s grandsons got married last year (on my birthday) and now also have a 7 month old baby named Janice. I’m hopefully going to see her and his wife this weekend which I am very much looking forward to.

It’s been a mixture of emotions and experiences: joy, nostalgia, new surprises, excitement, familiarity and belonging. The food is still as good as it was 3 years ago and I’m still receiving the HUGE portions I got back then too! Thankfully I am only here for 3 weeks so let’s hope I don’t put on as much weight as I did last time! Ghanian food is high in carbohydrates and comes in super-size only. This weekend I am planning on visiting Cape Coast, a town about 2 hours away form Takoradi where I am staying. It’s a cool place that’s fairly tourist orientated, so I am hoping to buy some presents for friends and myself of course. Saturday I think I and the current volunteer are going to Nzulezu, which is a village that is situated on stilts across a river. It’s said to be a highlight of Ghana and I was unable to visit it the first time I was there so am looking forward to that new experience.

Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my card reader so I am unsure if I can upload photos while I am here, but I will do as soon as I get home.
